Second Officer
Objective
To carry out according to the instructions of the master and Chief Officer the
duties of Officer of guard and deck, in a manner that promotes the safe
operation of the vessel, according to state and international laws and
regulations of the company.
Responsibilities
The Second Officer is responsible for:
- Implementing the procedures of the Safety Management System (ISM)
and the Security Management System (ISPS). - Ensuring the good condition, maintenance and monitoring of all the
security equipment that has been entrusted to him from the Chief Officer,
to keep proof of this project and to maintain the necessary inventory of
rescue vessels, fire extinguishers, and all relevant equipment. - Carrying out guards while at sea and ensuring that the vessel operates
with safety, while it is safely moored while at dock. - Assisting the Chief Officer with his duties, according to his instructions.
- Keeping all relevant up to date all nautical maps, the nautical
publications, the listing journals of map corrections and the map folios
(according to the weekly announcements for the mariners and the
warnings for navigation), to replace old publications and to prepare the
travel plan. - Starting and pausing, maintaining and updating the compass and its
journal. - Updating all the Muster lists.
- All the administrative issues the concern the vessel at port (meaning the
crew list, customs formalities etc.) - Recording drills and journals
- Being present at drills at the orders of the master.
- Being on duty during swim stops.
- Seafarer should cater for keeping his/her personal cabin clean and tidy
and keep same as such at his/ her own time and effort.
Reports to The master
Note:
- The duties and responsibilities of the second officer are assigned by the master to the Chief
Officer, when composition of the vessel does not require a second officer. - Seafarers are mployed as per MLC requirements. Their monthly earnings correspond to 312
hours of work, or on average 10 hours of work per day, including Sundays. Seafarer is entitled to minimum 10 hours of rest per 24 hours or minimum 77 hours of rest per 7
days.
